Let’s get started!

Unity Changes Fee Policy ◀️

Unity has taken a U-turn on its fee model, and this time, they've got their ears wide open to the gaming community. They've heard the ruckus, and they're trying to make amends with some hefty changes.

Unity's latest move gives a big bear hug to Unity Personal plan users – they've tossed the Runtime Fee out the window for these folks. Plus, they're boosting the revenue cap from $100,000 to a sweeter $200,000. And guess what? That pesky "Made with Unity" splash screen is now optional. Freedom, anyone?

But Unity's not stopping there. They're also playing nice with the little guys. If your game's raking in less than $1 million in a year, you're off the hook – no Runtime Fee for you. Unity's way of saying, "We've got your back, indie devs!" For the Pro and Enterprise champs, here's the scoop: the Runtime Fee policy won't kick in until the next Unity LTS version, slated for 2024. So, your current projects and games are safe, unless you're itching for an upgrade.

Now, here's the juicy part. Unity's cooked up a choose-your-own-adventure fee structure for games that do fall under the Runtime Fee umbrella. You can either pay 2.5% of your revenue or calculate it based on new user engagement – your call.

Unity's letting you be the boss of your bucks. Unity's message is clear: they hear their developers. But, let's be real, the initial confusion did shake up the trust a bit. It's a reminder that open communication and careful planning are essential in the game dev world.

Next Big Bet in Web3 Gaming ⛓️

Proof of Play, a Web3 gaming startup helmed by Farmville's co-creator, Amitt Mahajan, is making waves in the gaming world with its focus on on-chain gaming. They've recently secured an impressive $33 million in funding, attracting a cadre of investors keen on this gaming vertical.

Proof of Play's vision hinges on blockchain-based games that can "outlive their creator." Here, gaming assets and developer code persist as long as someone supports the blockchain behind the game, creating autonomous worlds and ensuring game longevity. They're all about crafting "multi-generational products" that belong to the gaming communities.

One of their flagship offerings, "Pirate Nation," is an entirely blockchain-based game, constantly evolving with weekly updates, including card-based combat, island building, and community-driven world boss raids.

In a nutshell, Proof of Play's venture into on-chain gaming is poised to transform the industry, offering players an immersive and lasting experience while preserving their gaming investments. Their focus on on-chain games means data is permanent, and gameplay progress is forever stored on the blockchain, making each game a "forever game."

Another Network Hack 😥

Mixin Network, a digital asset cross-chain transactional platform, recently found itself at the center of a major security breach, resulting in the loss of a staggering $200 million in user funds over the weekend.

The incident prompted the immediate suspension of deposits and withdrawals on the platform. The breach occurred when malicious actors successfully infiltrated the database of Mixin Network's cloud service provider, sending shockwaves throughout the cryptocurrency community.

In an official statement, the Mixin team explained their course of action: "After discussion and consensus among all nodes, these services will be reopened once the vulnerabilities are confirmed and fixed." Fortunately, transfers on the platform remain unaffected during this critical period.

However, some users have expressed concerns about Mixin's degree of "decentralization," highlighting its reliance on a centralized frontend. This incident serves as a stark reminder that even projects with genuine decentralization intentions can still be susceptible to centralized points of failure.

Mixin Network's $200 million security breach ranks among the largest cryptocurrency hacks of the year, joining the ranks of other notable incidents such as the Ronin Network, Poly Network, and BNB Bridge hacks.
