Q1 2023 has been epic!

We have witnessed some of the most anticipated games from last year and most of them exceeded our expectations. Further, we saw the influx of talent and capital into Web3 gaming continue to grow.

What was even more surprising is the quick transition of Web2 gaming studios to Web3. Many big names are now actively building games in Web3. And each one looks more promising than the other.

Furthermore, we also saw some of the biggest partnerships in the space involving Polygon, Avalanche, and other gaming partners. So Q1 2023 is one for the books for crypto space and Web3 gaming.

In this newsletter, we are going to cover an epic comeback story of Ronin and share the latest game and ecosystem updates. Let’s get started!

Ronin’s Comeback Story

This Ethereum sidechain powered the wildly popular Axie Infinity play-to-earn game, and during the bull run of 2021, it was the talk of the town.

With over a million daily active users and a market cap of $10 billion, Ronin was processing four times more transactions than Ethereum itself. It was a force to be reckoned with, a titan among sidechains.

But alas, every hero has their kryptonite. In March of 2022, Ronin was hacked for a whopping $625 million, the largest blockchain network hack in history. The culprits? None other than the notorious North Korean hacker group Lazarus.

This devastating blow left Ronin's parent company, Sky Mavis, with a choice: give up or come back stronger. And what do we love more than a good comeback story?

Sky Mavis opted for the latter and set their sights on breaking the centralization that had made them vulnerable.

The solution? A switch to the Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus model, allowing users to stake RON, Ronin's native token, earn more tokens, and secure the network by appointing validators.

In addition, Ronin is going beyond Axie Infinity by onboarding five new gaming studios.

These studios will create a variety of games, starting with The Machines Arena that is now in closed beta.

By adding new IP, Sky Mavis is creating an ecosystem of diverse gaming experiences on the blockchain.
